The longest-enduring standardized college admissions test in the nation, the SAT has faced decades of controversy over bias and criticism for reducing aspiring college students to a test score. Discrepancies with standardized testing appear to be symptomatic of the inequality endemic to the education system. In 2005, the College Board added an 800-point writing section to the exam alongside its math and verbal reasoning sections. In this Jan. 17, 2016 file photo, a sign is seen at the entrance to a hall for a college test preparation class in Bethesda, Md. Elon Musk's startup Neuralink streamed a live video on Wednesday that showed a patient using the company's brain implant to move a mouse and play chess on a computer. A BCI is a system that deciphers brain signals and translates them into commands for external technologies. Dr. Nader Pouratian, chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center, said researchers have been developing and studying BCI technology for years. It is not clear how many patients are participating in Neuralink's trial, or what the trial is trying to demonstrate. There is reason to be hopeful about Neuralink's technology, said Dr. Marco Baptista, chief scientific officer of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, which provides resources to people who have become paralyzed.

CNN —A Tennessee judge has temporarily blocked the NCAA from enforcing parts of its interim policy that would have restricted how student athletes negotiate compensation for their names, images and likeness. The so-called NIL policy included NCAA bylaws that would have prohibited student athletes from negotiating with any third-party entity, including schools or boosters. To be sure, it is pure speculation to assume that student-athletes would receive more lucrative NIL deals in an open market. Fair market value may be equal to or less than the NIL deals student-athletes can currently receive after selecting a school. But without the give and take of a free market, student-athletes simply have no knowledge of their true NIL value.

AdvertisementThere's a little-known reason more companies aren't paying for their workers' weight-loss shots. But even at a reduced price, weight-loss drugs are budget-busting, so employers have tried to make them tougher to get. Or it could require patients to try a cheaper weight-loss drug before resorting to more expensive options. The University of Texas System, facing a bill of more than $5 million a month for its workers’ weight-loss drugs, explored saving some money by paying only for people already on the drugs. UT System ended all coverage for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs in September 2023.

U.S. import and export data shows that the majority of the country's trade is on foreign-flagged vessels. The Congressional calls to consider prioritizing U.S.-flagged vessels come at a time when the Iranian-backed Houthis continue to attack shipping in the Red Sea. Other nations, including U.S. ally France, have already declared their priority is to escort French-linked vessels after facing nationalistic pressure. "It could also be argued that directing military action to defend U.S. commercial shipping is within this power. However, most vessels transiting through the Red Sea are not U.S. ships, which raises questions about the extent to which these authorities can be exercised," they wrote.

AdvertisementConnecticut was quick to experience the impact of weight loss drugs on its economy last year. Politico reported in November that the state's employee health plan was set to spend $30 million on drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. Comptroller Sean Scanlon told BI that that was up from $8 million in 2020. Connecticut began testing out a method to offer those seeking weight loss drugs access to a program with online tools for weight management. In North Carolina, the State Health Plan has put a moratorium on new users of GLP-1 drugs for weight loss.

But home prices are still on the rise, according to a November 28 note from Selma Hepp, the chief economist at CoreLogic. The outcome is that many remain renters, which drives up demand for rental property and the cost of rent. If the cost of rent is 20% below the price of owning a home monthly, then it may be comparable. Rent prices are based on listings from Rent.com. For example, take the cost of rent over five years; let's say it's $3,000 x 12 months = $36,000 annually.

CNN —A network of hospitals in East Texas has not been able to accept ambulances to emergency rooms since Thanksgiving Day because of a “potential [cyber]security incident,” a hospital spokesperson told CNN on Friday. The hospital network, UT Health East Texas, is operating using “established downtime procedures” as the hospital investigates “a potential security incident” and works to bring computers back online, spokesperson Allison Pollan said in an email. Headquartered in Tyler, Texas, UT Health East Texas operates 10 hospitals and more than 90 clinics in the region, and provides health care to thousands of patients annually, according to its LinkedIn page. The East Texas health care system is just the latest hospital group that has been forced to turn ambulances away because of an apparent cybersecurity incident. The cyber incident at UT Health East Texas began on Thursday when the hospital network “became aware of a network outage” and moved to lock down its network, according to the hospital network’s statement to CNN.

The photograph tells us nothing about whether or how these children are related. Hundreds of Israeli hostages, including children, are believed to be held in Gaza by Hamas, their families desperate for their safe release. It is a rare thing for mainstream news organizations to publish graphic images of dead or wounded children. There is nothing quite so devastating as the image of a child whose life has been snuffed out by senseless violence. And so the slaughter in Maine reminded me of another image from Gaza, one you may have seen on social media.

Incoming Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth on Thursday briefly praised the company's pharmacy staff, but made no mention of the three-day protest walkouts they held this week over poor working conditions. The walkouts reflect rising dissatisfaction among pharmacy employees, who have complained for years about having to grapple with understaffing and burdensome work expectations imposed by corporate management. The experiences he's had with employees made his decision to join Walgreens "frankly, an easy one," Wentworth added. A Walgreens spokesperson touted the company's pharmacy teams in the statement, noting that they work "tirelessly to serve our communities." Walgreens is engaged and listening to the concerns of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, the spokesperson said.
